Archiving of aFlattr – closing all dynamic functions

Hey aFlattr users,
Almost one and a half years after we had to close shop, we think it is now time to lay aFlattr to rest. This step moves all related pages into our archives and strippes away all dynamic functionality. This includes the aFlattr dashboard, sharing links and other external services/links.
From now on accessing the aFlattr dashboard and retrieving stats is no longer possible, but for convenience all pages and posts will be available within our archive.

Check out some of your latest projects.

Cheers

aFlattr will be discontinued due to Amazon partnership hassle

Hey aFlattr users,

After the unfortunate discontinuation of our partnership with Amazon it was a bumpy ride for the aFlattr team. We did our best to get a decent replacement, continue the work on aFlattr and enable all of you to give back easily again. We put a lot of energy into aFlattr in the 3 years it existed. We would have loved to go on, but after months of consideration, reworking and partnership search, we have decided to make a clean break and discontinue aFlattr. This will enable us to start new projects and enable us to provide you with an even better service/project in the future.

The aFlattr site will stay up for the foreseeable future and will reflect the latest development. We will probably move the blog to a static place so the information is retained.

Thank you for your patience and your ongoing support.

Sad day for charities and free content

Hey aFlattr users,
As you all know aFlattr promoted the continuous usage of Amazon to purchase your favorite items, in turn providing you with the ability to support your favorite content, charity and much more. The agreement was terminated less than 48 hours ago. In spite of my best efforts to come to a new agreement, they do not want to support aFlattr anymore. With the immediate termination they removed all outstanding balances. This decision results in the inability to payout any “outstanding” balances you see in your dashboards. I apologize for the trouble this decision from Amazon causes. It was not possible to get any funds released, which results in no further payouts from aFlattr for the foreseeable future. Amazon clearly stated they do not payout the money, even if 100% of it goes to charity or to aFlattr users.

I’m still determined to provide people with an easy and seamless way to support their favorite content and charity, but without Amazon we have to review our options and future plans before we are able to give you further information. This is a hard blow for aFlattr and we appreciate your support.

Stay updated about future directions via Twitter.

Detailed story:
About 3 years ago aFlattr started out in the search for an easy way to support the community. After the idea took shape I contacted Amazon.de and Amazon.com or (to be clear) their associate programs to explain the browser plugin. Especially the usage as offering of incentives was not permitted in their operating agreement. I was called back by someone from Amazon Inc. or a subsidiary as far as I can say. After explaining the inner workings, the auto-tracking and the benefits for Amazon I was approved as an Amazon Associate. It was reapproved in the months and years that followed, but was terminated just 48 hours ago. It seems the positive stand towards charity and being a valuable member of the community changed in recent months.
In the beginning aFlattr grew slowly. It started with only a handful of users in 2010. The 500 user mark was broken at the beginning of 2012. In 2013 a steady stream of new users flowed in, but it took until April of 2013 that users really started to pour in. In the end almost 2000 users signed up to give back to others.
We payed out a total of 18405.06€ and it would have been almost 40000€ 30000€¹y/strong>, if the remaining funds would have been released.

I am happy aFlattr could be a part of a caring community around Flattr.com.
My appreciation goes out to the continued support and encouragement from Flattr! We will do our best to make the aFlattr idea a possibility again.

The Chrome/Chromium extension is now field testing expedia.de integration. The Firefox extension is still in the review process to be updated to version 1. expedia.de

Hey aFlattr users,
We are now field testing the integration of expedia.de in the latest Chrome/Chromium version. So if you book a flight the outcome should be around ~1.5%*, for holiday packages ~3%* and 17.50€* as a fixed rate for hotels. Other shops are already planned, but not every company is easily convinced. Chrome/Chromium will be the only browser supporting the new shop with version 1.0.9. Firefox has to be reviewed by Mozilla for the latest changes to take effect. For all Safari users, aFlattr is now part of the official Apple developer program and we will be starting our work on a Safari version this week.
aFlattr is still waiting for the release of the new Flattr API, so statistics can be made available via a dashboard.

DNS issues

Hey aFlattr users,

A minimal update on our current state. The Firefox version is still in the review process, which could take as long as 40 days. They are swamped with reviews right now. Sorry for that. The Chrome/Chromium users can already enjoy the latest version. Linking the release with the Firefox release delay seemed inoptimal.
We are having some DNS issues right now, which results in a server error. These issues will be fixed till tomorrow.

On a happy notice:
The money for June 2011 should already be in your Flattr accounts.

aFlattr version 1 release

Hey aFlattr users,

There will be a few topics I wanna give you some updates about.

Version 1 (backend + extensions) :
In the last few months aFlattr was totally rewritten from PHP to Python on the server-side. It is now using Flask as a Python framework and PostgreSQL as SQL-backend. Why rewriting an already “functioning” server-side backend? The answer is pretty easy. The code is now way faster. It is easier to add new features (new shops, statistics for customers etc.). Administrative and public functionalities are separated into their own set of services being available via API. Further admin capabilities for task automation concerning processing were added and are easy to extend. After the backend-rewrite, the browser extensions needed an overhaul. With the latest update there are a lot of bug fixes, performance improvements and general modularization to make new features easier to add.

Mozilla is reviewing version 1 of the Firefox extension right now. Version 1 for Chrome/Chromium will be released on the day the review finishes. The review and the final release should be arriving next week.

Great news for Safari users, the Safari extension is in development and will soon be finished.

SSL:
Perhaps you already noticed, that aFlattr.com is now being served using SSL. We did not only add SSL, but we are enforcing SSL usage on the whole site. Ramping up security is as much a pleasure as providing you with the ability to support what you love. We take your security and data-privacy seriously.

Data/privacy:
aFlattr was built from the ground up not to even enable tracking of any data not required for the base functionality. We therefore can not and do not to track any purchase, url history or any other data. The only data we use and have access to is your Flattr username and the connected Amazon affiliate ID. Furthermore the data we get from Amazon can not be used to bind a specifc purchase to a user. The only datapoint available is the amount per month generated for each tracking ID, which is linked to your Flattr username.

That is one reason you do not have to provide more than your Flattr-ID, not even your eMail address is mandatory.

Statistics:
How much will be payed out and when? We are developing a dashboard to lookup your own statistics. Unfortunately we have to wait for the new Flattr api with oauth authentication to enable secure delivery of your stats. We will be using oauth only in readonly mode and use it purely to verify, that you are logged in with the Flattr account you want to access on our dashboard.

Other changes:
Enforcing SSL on every page on aflattr.com was not the only change. We improved pageload performance through static content (images, css, js, etc.) delivery via the Akamai content delivery network and added memcached support on the backend to bring you a blazing fast webage experience. Not only the performance got improved, we also added a german translation to our site.

Additionally we rewrote parts of the FAQ to give you better answers to your questions.

Revenue cut:
Due to the ongoing development, rising server costs and the release of version 1, we will start using a 10% share to compensate for part of our costs. This revenue share will be enabled with the release of version 1. This will not only enable further development, but help us cover some of our server costs.

We hope you love the latest changes.

Faster Payout

Hey aFlattr users,

After a few delays with the payouts from April and May the issues are resolved. Flattr is hard at work making these transactions faster and more visible to you. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. More visibility is now available with the new transaction label “Deposit from Flattr”.

Transfers:
In April a total of 347.10€ were transferred to aFlattr users.
In May the transferred amount was 293.00€.
The amount in June is close to 500.00€.

Some additional information:
What happens to the money from aFlattr, when an account has been deleted? It is pretty easy. I decided to use it to support projects, charities via Flattr.com.

Version 1.0 is still in development, it should resolve a lot of bugs and give a better overall feeling.

Short notice

Hey aFlattr users,

The payment for May 2011 is processed now. Flattr has some issues transfering the amount into accounts right now, but hopefully both payments from April and May will be processed in the coming week. I did what I could to hurry up the payment. Sorry for the delay.

Just a short update notice:
Version 1.0 is getting ready soon. For the coming versions, I already talked to Thomann.de, Rackspace, KabelDeutschland, Apple, iTunes and Ebay to support aFlattr. Any other suggestions?

Something making me smile:
Last month aFlattr processed about 600.00€, this will be payed in October.
